as woman or man, man and woman, or neither man nor woman <em>(Ontario Human Rights Commission, n.d.)<\/em>.<\/li><li><em>There are many other terms, such as genderqueer, non-binary, and <\/em><em>genderfluid that people may use to describe their gender identity.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-73d3201a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"73d3201a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Transgender (trans) people face unique stressors and experience higher rates of discrimination and harassment than cisgender people. All of these experiences and stressors can increase suicide risk <em>(Valentine &amp; Shipherd, 2018)<\/em>.<\/p><h5><strong>STIGMA<\/strong><\/h5><p>Trans people can be affected by many different forms of stigma. This stigma causes stress and can include external factors like discrimination, prejudice, and violence, and internal factors such as internalized identity concealment<em> (Lick et al., 2013)<\/em>.<\/p><h5><strong>INDIVIDUAL STIGMA<\/strong><\/h5><p>People who belong to stigmatized and minority groups may conceal their true identities even to themselves; this is a form of internalized stigma against oneself as a result of exposure to stigma from the outside world <em>(Puckett &amp; Levitt, 2015)<\/em>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-17677715 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"17677715\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><strong>FAMILIAL STIGMA<\/strong><\/h5><p>When family and friends do not accept a person\u2019s gender identity it can be extremely distressing to the individual and can lead to isolation, depression, and hopelessness <em>(Dickey et al., 2016)<\/em>.<\/p><h5><strong>STRUCTURAL STIGMA<\/strong><\/h5><p>Structural stigma manifests as laws and policies which create inequalities and\/or fail to protect trans people from discrimination; for example, policies that make gender-affirming care more difficult to access. Trans people may also face discrimination in workplaces, academic institutions, and health and social services <em>(Hatzenbueheler et al., 2024)<\/em>.<\/p><h5><strong>PUBLIC STIGMA<\/strong><\/h5><p>This kind of stigma affecting trans people is caused by the general public\u2019s lack of knowledge and understanding about gender identity, gender fluidity, and transgender people (which can lead to isolation and discrimination).<\/p><h5><strong>INTERSECTIONAL STIGMA<\/strong><\/h5><p>Intersectionality refers to when people belong to or identify with more than one social group. People experiencing intersectionality will feel the effects of identifying with their different groups <em>(Turan et al., 2019)<\/em>. For example, a white transgender person may be exposed to less discrimination than a Black transgender person, who may be experiencing racial discrimination as well as gender discrimination. These complexities need to be considered in any suicide prevention effort designed to support people experiencing intersectionality.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3ad1b384 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"3ad1b384\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a523c9b e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"a523c9b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-691620af elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"691620af\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><strong>EXPERIENCE OF DISCRIMINATION (TRANSPHOBIA)<\/strong><\/h5><p>Transphobia refers to the rejection of trans identity and a refusal to acknowledge that it is real and valid <em>(TransActual, 2024)<\/em>. It can manifest as physical or verbal harassment, or physical or sexual assault. Transphobia can be perpetrated by individuals or on an institutional or societal level (see above \u201cStructural stigma\u201d).<\/p><h5><strong>STRESS RELATED TO TRANSITIONING<\/strong><\/h5><p>A person who has chosen to medically transition to the gender with which they identify may experience stress related to the transition. These stressors include: life disruption,<br \/>potential backlash from friends, family, and employers, as well as the risks and sometimes lengthy time period involved in medical transitioning <em>(Dickey et al., 2016)<\/em>.<\/p><h5><strong>LACK OF ACCESS TO GENDER AFFIRMING MENTAL HEALTH CARE AND HEALTH CARE<\/strong><\/h5><p>Trans people often face discrimination in healthcare settings, yet access to health care is vital for trans people as those who seek to medically transition require specialized care <em>(Taylor et al., 2020)<\/em>.<\/p><h5><strong>HOMELESSNESS<\/strong><\/h5><p>2SLGBTQIA+ youth are greatly overrepresented in the youth population who are experiencing homelessness in North America <em>(McCann &amp; Brown, 2021)<\/em>. The shelter system needs to foster safe spaces for all youth and staf should be trained on \u201cissues relating to [2SLGBTQIA+] youth culture, terminology, needs, homophobia and transphobia\u201d<em>(Abramovich et al., 2022)<\/em>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6b03562c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"6b03562c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-795d66dd e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"795d66dd\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1dc21fd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1dc21fd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote><h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0077c8;\">2 in 3 <\/span><\/strong>surveyed transgender<span style=\"color: #0077c8;\"><strong> 14-18 year olds<\/strong> <\/span>had seriously considered suicide in the previous year <em>(Veale et al., 2017).<\/em><\/h3><\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-83069c5 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"83069c5\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4925e30d e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"4925e30d\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d953098 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"3d953098\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a134ca1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a134ca1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote><h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">The lifetime prevalence of attempted suicide for trans people is estimated to be between <span style=\"color: #0077c8;\"><strong>32 and 41%<\/strong><\/span> <em>(Mak et al., 2020)<\/em><\/h3><\/blockquote>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7900041f e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"7900041f\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-282a6313 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"282a6313\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Warning Signs<\/h3>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-570dbea0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"570dbea0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A significant change in behaviour or mood can be a warning sign that someone may be thinking about suicide. Look out for signs such as:<\/p><ul><li>Statements that indicate hopelessness or being a burden<\/li><li>Threatening suicide or talking about wanting to die<strong>*<\/strong><\/li><li>Looking for ways to die<strong>*<\/strong><\/li><li>Suicide attempt<\/li><li>Increased substance use<\/li><li>No sense of purpose in life or evident reason for living<\/li><li>Withdrawal from friends and family<\/li><li>Rage, anger, irritability<\/li><li>Recklessness<\/li><li>Dramatic mood changes <em>(American Association of Suicidology, n.d.)<\/em><\/li><\/ul><p><br \/><em><strong>*<\/strong>These warning signs indicate immediate suicide risk. Stay with the person who is exhibiting these signs and connect them to help. In Canada, call or text the Suicide Crisis Helpline at <a href=\"https:\/\/988.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">9-8-8<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-618cd375 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"618cd375\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-78b7c4fc e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"78b7c4fc\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5da604d7 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"5da604d7\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7f2fb02c e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"7f2fb02c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22d74e85 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"22d74e85\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>What can we as individuals do to help reduce suicide among trans people?\u00a0<\/h3>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-499138cd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"499138cd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><strong>Respect trans people by affirming their gender identity:<\/strong><br \/>Normalize pronoun sharing by sharing your own when introducing yourself or as part of your identification (e.g., in an email signature, on video calls).
