Despite this, there are still significant gaps in understanding this unwieldy space and the impact that some of the discourse spread within it might have on gender-based violence, women, 2SLGBTQI+ people, and other vulnerable communities, and the well-being of boys and young men.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b706edc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b706edc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3 style=\"font-size: 21pt;\"><strong>What is the Manosphere?<\/strong><\/h3>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1b90214 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1b90214\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The \u201cmanosphere\u201d is the name given to a large, but loose, network of men\u2019s groups that communicate online via these tools and spaces:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Podcasts and webcasts<\/li>\n<li>Blogs<\/li>\n<li>Websites<\/li>\n<li>Online forums, such as Reddit<\/li>\n<li>Gaming platforms<\/li>\n<li>Social media, including (but not limited to) TikTok and Instagram<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s no one philosophy uniting the manosphere. Broadly speaking, most of the content creators and influencers trade in a combination of anti-feminism, misogyny, and a distorted view of self-improvement rooted in hypermasculinity, dominance, and control.<\/li>\n<li>While a few groups frame their content as serious reflections on masculinity, much of the manosphere thrives on sensationalism \u2013 selling male victimhood and hyper-masculine posturing as both identity and profit model.<\/li>\n<li>Since digital media is an attention economy, influencers are incentivized to be more extreme to increase engagement. Many use abusive language and promote misogyny, anti-2SLGBTQI+ rhetoric, transphobia, and hatred of refugee and other newcomer communities.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d4bbbaf e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"d4bbbaf\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2170888 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"2170888\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2ccafc3 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"2ccafc3\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e765b9b e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"e765b9b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dd53382 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"dd53382\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0707e47 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"0707e47\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e795f27 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e795f27\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><strong>How Did the Manosphere Start?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-396c7fb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"396c7fb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emerald.com\/insight\/content\/doi\/10.1108\/978-1-83982-254-420211004\/full\/html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">origins<\/a> of the manosphere have been traced back to men\u2019s rights movements established in the 1970s and 1980s as part of the backlash against Second Wave Feminism that saw women make some gains. Many members of men\u2019s rights groups singled out feminism as the main cause of a range of social problems.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4097193 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4097193\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><strong>The Backlash Goes Digital<\/strong><\/h3>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ac25c3a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ac25c3a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Men\u2019s rights groups eventually migrated online and were joined by others, including fathers\u2019 rights groups, pick-up artists, and incels (involuntary celibates) and, by 2009, it was being called the \u201cmanosphere.\u201d Compared with the 1970s backlash that used face-to-face meetings, print media, radio, and television to make its argument, the manosphere has a much wider reach, especially with young people, many of whom own tablets and smartphones and have unsupervised access to the internet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cIt\u2019s the reach, but it\u2019s also the private aspect of digital media, so parents don\u2019t necessarily know what their kids are doing online,\u201d says Kyle Ganson, Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto\u2019s Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work.<\/li>\n<li>Since the algorithms are built around engagement and play a major role in what we see on digital media, Ganson says you can very quickly get \u201cthrown down a rabbit hole without really intending to.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Since the manosphere can be big business, it\u2019s always targeting new members, no matter what their age. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen reports that show boys getting involved in these kinds of groups at ages younger than 14, so we&#8217;re talking about eight- to 14-year-olds who are already active members,\u201d says Humberto Carolo, White Ribbon Chief Executive Officer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1777bf3 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"1777bf3\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-488652f e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"488652f\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6d86cc6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6d86cc6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><strong>The Manosphere and Mental Health<\/strong><\/h3>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-32b1a22 grey-bg elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"32b1a22\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Online discussions of masculinity don\u2019t inherently pose risks to mental health, but some of the specific sites and content can have an impact on the well-being of boys and young men. In addition, there are negative mental health outcomes felt in communities impacted by increased discrimination, stigmatization, and gender-based violence that is encouraged in some parts of the manosphere.\u00a0<\/p><p>Here are some of the negative mental health outcomes that experts are concerned about.\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><strong>Body Dysmorphia and Self-Harm<\/strong> \u2013 The \u201clooksmaxxing\u201d community is a corner of the manosphere that sees six million users per month visit looksmaxing sites in the hopes that they\u2019ll get tips on how to become better-looking, more masculine \u2013 as defined by other users, who also rate photos of men to determine their attractiveness. Recent <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11896937\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> at Dalhousie University has found that the looksmax community \u201csubjects users to masculine demoralization, wherein they are seen as failed men and encouraged to self\u2010harm.\u201d\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Rage and Aggression \u2013 <\/strong>A certain amount of rage is built into some discourses found in the manosphere. \u201cYoung people start believing that 2SLGBTQI+ people, women, newcomers, and refugee communities are to blame for men\u2019s challenges and problems,\u201d says Humberto Carolo. \u201cThey start to think they\u2019ve been left behind and don\u2019t have access to resources and a rage starts to emerge.\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Violence Against Vulnerable Communities \u2013 <\/strong>Because the algorithm rewards engagement\u2014both good and bad\u2014and content producers are trying to grow an audience for profit; some influencers slowly drift into extreme territory. Dehumanization, hate speech, and violent rhetoric aren\u2019t uncommon.<\/li><\/ul><p>There\u2019s plenty of concern that some young men and boys are radicalized and prompted to violent actions by what they see and hear. In 2018, a 25-year-old man, inspired by an online misogynistic community, posted that the \u201cIncel rebellion had begun\u201d before he used a van to run over pedestrians on a sidewalk in Toronto\u2019s North York. Ten died; 16 were injured.\u00a0<\/p><p>Gender-based violence, hate, and discrimination against vulnerable communities have a negative impact on the mental health and well-being of everyone. Negative content can lead to serious ramifications.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-94178fe e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"94178fe\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fbfd627 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"fbfd627\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-17565a9 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"17565a9\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-207dcb2 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"207dcb2\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-59a966d e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"59a966d\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c5416b7 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"c5416b7\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b05a405 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b05a405\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><strong>Harm Prevention: What Steps Can We Take\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6ddc803 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6ddc803\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Learning more about the manosphere, including some of the language commonly used, can help parents identify potential problems early.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A good introduction is the \u201cMy Friend, Max Hate\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiteribbon.ca\/myfriendmaxhate?lng=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">campaign<\/a> launched earlier this year by White Ribbon. It contains an introductory glossary of words from the manosphere, including terms like \u201cred pilling,\u201d and \u201chustle bros\u201d. Max Hate is also on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@max_hate_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TikTok<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The Canadian Museum for Human Rights has an <a href=\"https:\/\/humanrights.ca\/story\/online-misogyny-manosphere\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">excellent primer<\/a> on the manosphere.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Parents, families, educators, guardians, and all role models can help young people navigate digital media by having open and honest conversations and teaching them media literacy, says Kyle Ganson. Here are a few of Ganson\u2019s concrete tips:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Explain to kids that social media is just a very small snippet of what the real world is actually like.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Teach them how to <em>unfollow<\/em> and <em>unlike<\/em> particular things to train the algorithm to be more attuned to what they actually want.<\/li>\n<li>Instead of making it about oversight, make it more like going on a journey with them that you can help navigate, Ganson says. \u201cRemember they\u2019re trying to figure out their place in the world, their identity and fit in with their peers, so not stigmatizing or shaming them is really important.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>One guideline Ganson suggests is a \u201cno screens in the bedroom rule.\u201d If it\u2019s used in an open space like the living room, it\u2019s a little less private. It will also curb tech-induced sleep disorders.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Concerned parents should consider joining other parents in the friend group and talking about setting <strong>social media rules and boundaries<\/strong> as a group.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cI think the other thing is actively promoting what you want your kids to do,\u201d says Ganson. \u201cSo that means, for parents of young boys, how do you teach them the values of manhood and masculinity? Ultimately, kids learn by viewing. They learn by seeing their parents and other male figures in their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And that falls to more than just parents, says White Ribbon\u2019s Humberto Carolo.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need men, in particular, to speak out against this so that we help to drown these hateful ideologies and provide young men with good examples of what it means to be supportive and what it means to live healthy masculinities,\u201d says Carolo. \u201cWe need examples for how to open up and talk to those around us about our issues and deal with our emotions in healthier ways.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7e8c648 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con Ganson<\/strong>, PhD, MSW, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto&#8217;s Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work. His research focuses on eating disorders, muscle dysmorphia, and muscle-building behaviours among adolescents and young adults, particularly boys and young men. Dr. Ganson is the principal investigator of the Canadian Study of Adolescent Health Behaviors, a national, longitudinal study of health behaviours, including eating disorders and muscle-building behaviours, among Canadian adolescents and young adults across all 13 provinces and territories in Canada. Dr. Ganson has published more than 122 peer-reviewed academic papers in leading adolescent health, eating disorder, body image, and substance use journals. Dr. Ganson has over 10 years of direct clinical social work practice experience and he teaches clinical social work courses to MSW students.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\n<li><strong>David Garzon<\/strong> is the Director of Marketing and Communications at White Ribbon. It is the world\u2019s largest movement of men and boys working to end all forms of gender-based violence and discrimination.
