There are now more than 11,000 centenarians in Canada, which is roughly three times as many as there were 25 years ago. That\u2019s a good thing, of course. Improved public health measures, as well as medical and surgical advances have increased our lifespan and that\u2019s a major factor driving the growth of older demographics.<\/p><p>That said, even though healthcare is better, when it comes to keeping older populations healthy, it\u2019s clear that there\u2019s work to be done. Although we\u2019ve heard these used in the media, comparing a demographic to a tsunami implies that the older adult population is a potentially dangerous threat, often based in an idea that older adults represent a burden on healthcare and other social services.<\/p><ul><li>Replace words that have negative connotations with inclusive language.<\/li><li>Avoid negative terms like: \u201cold person,\u201d \u201cgeriatric,\u201d \u201cthe aged,\u201d \u201celderly,\u201d \u201cthe old-old,\u201d or \u201csenior citizen.\u201d<\/li><li>Instead, use terms like \u201colder adults,\u201d or \u201colder person.\u201d<\/li><li>Alternatively, use specific numbers, such as \u201cpeople over 50.\u201d<\/li><li>Instead of using \u201cthey\u201d or \u201cthem,\u201d use \u201cwe\u201d and \u201cus.\u201d We\u2019re all aging, after all.<\/li><li>No matter how well-meant, some positive terms, euphemisms and clich\u00e9s such as \u201cgolden years,\u201d \u201cyoung at heart,\u201d \u201cof a certain age,\u201d \u201caging well,\u201d \u201csuccessful aging\u201d and \u201csuper-agers\u201d also pose a problem.<ul><li>Some are condescending; others reinforce stereotypes.<\/li><li>The latter three imply there\u2019s a right way and a wrong way to age and place the responsibility for healthy aging on the individual.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Avoid describing older adults as weak, cognitively impaired, frail, dependent, suffering or vulnerable.
